Hlíf Ásgrímsdóttir pursued her education at the Icelandic School of Art and Crafts from 1987 to 1991, followed by postgraduate studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland, from 1994 to 1996. The artist is showered with numerous prestigious awards & accolades in her wonderful artistic journey up until now. Over the years of her distinguished artistic journey to date, the artist has conducted numerous solo exhibitions not only in Iceland but also in other Nordic countries and various regions of Europe. The artist was awarded 'Muggur Iceland' by Ferða- og dvalarstyrkur, Ferðastyrkur, Dvalarstyrkur on two occasions, specifically in 2007 and 2005 respectively.
In recent years, the artist has exhibited works extensively that thoughtfully engage with the exhibition space and the surrounding environment of the venues. Hlíf has designated these exhibitions as Innivera, Innilokun, Innihorn, Innskot, and Innviðir. Photographs of exhibition spaces, enhanced by painted representations, incorporating everyday objects, as these abandoned items within a location serve as poignant reminders of human presence. In the exhibition titled Innlyksa, Ásgrímsdóttir has seamlessly integrated rolled plastic-an omnipresent element in nature-into the exhibition space and accompanying visuals. She has captured numerous watercolor photographs in Brekkan, Akureyri, where the presence of plastic is discernible among the foliage and grass. Identifying plastic can be a challenge, as it gradually deteriorates and adopts hues that blend seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment. In her expansive watercolor creations, Hlíf Ásgrímsdóttir transforms plastic into a delineating boundary within an envisioned realm. An enclosure serves as a metaphor for being halted or ensnared in a particular location.
Hlíf's works were showcased at both the ‘First’ & ‘Second’ phase of ‘Third Kolkata International Art Exhibition 2025’ or ‘3rd KIAE 2025’ for short, curated by artist ‘Kaushik Gupta’ and were held at ‘Birla Academy of Art & Culture’ and ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ Kolkata, in the months of February and March respectively.
The artist allocates her time working in Berlin and Reykjavik, Iceland.
