Antonius Kho
Antonius Kho was born in Klaten, Java, Indonesia, to Chinese parents, draws inspiration from batik patterns, Wayang puppet performances, and daily life. His paintings replicate images that change the original meanings of cultural elements into just visual signs. Critics see these as modern and abstract art, featuring collages, mosaics, and cubist designs. A recurring "eye" in his work symbolizes truth, reflecting his desire to understand life and people. His art showcases the blend and conflict of Eastern and Western cultures, often presenting chaotic representations created by intersecting lines and multiple perspectives. This may mirror his mental state shaped by diverse life experiences and a critical view of societal events. Antonius typically uses paper, rag, and jute, with colors influenced by nature, particularly earthy or yellow tones.
Antonius Kho began his artistic journey under the guidance of renowned Indonesian artists like Barli. After obtaining his degree from the Academy of Fine Art in Bandung, Indonesia, in 1982, he continued his studies in Cologne, Germany, at the Academy of Fine Art, specializing in glass painting and textile arts. He then attended the Master School of Art, studying under Prof. Schaffmeister and M. Brinkhaus, completing his education in 1991. In 1989, he secured the 1st prize in the competition “Malen auf Liegestuehlen” held at Olivandenhof in Cologne, Germany. Later, in 1998, he again won the 1st prize for “Mask in Venice” at the Art Addiction Annual in Venice, Italy. From 1984 to 2020, he showcased his work in 33 solo exhibitions across various countries, including Indonesia, India, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Finland, the USA, Vietnam, South Korea, and China. Additionally, between 2005 and 2020, he participated in 114 group exhibitions around the globe, with locations such as Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, the UAE, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Moldova, Morocco, Russia, the USA, Canada, Egypt, Ecuador, Argentina, Panama, Peru, Mexico, Uruguay, Myanmar, China, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal. Some of these exhibitions were hosted by national institutions and esteemed art organizations, including Art Basel and Saatchi Gallery. Consequently, it is not surprising that his works are part of prestigious collections owned by museums, galleries, and art foundations worldwide, as well as private collectors. Antonius is also highly engaged in the art community, often organizing art exchange initiatives among fellow artists.
