THEME
Memory and Time
'4kiae 2026'
'Memory and Time' are deeply intertwined, significantly affecting our self-perception, our changing identities, and the way we experience our thoughts. Instead of just acting as a passive storage for events, memory plays an active role in crafting our personal experience of time, which greatly influences how we create and later recall our memories.
In both modern and contemporary art, the ideas of memory and time are not only central but essential. These concepts go beyond static, traditional depictions to become vital, interactive elements of artistic creation. Artists explore the idea of memory by referencing both personal and shared histories, using time as an active medium that can expand, compress, or pause, thereby altering our understanding of time’s flow. Our memories do not operate like a simple video tape of past occurrences that can be replayed anytime. Rather, each time we remember, they are reconstructed and re-imagined, which clarifies why our sense of time’s passage can often appear irregular or disjointed. Furthermore, art acts as a collective memory for society, capturing shared experiences and feelings. Using a wide array of artistic forms—inclusive of paintings, music, literature, and more—artists have illustrated life in ways that frequently go beyond just factual historical narratives.
Art functions as a distinct language, allowing individuals from various cultural backgrounds to connect and relate through sounds, images, and stories that resonate emotionally. Hence, with the main theme of 'Memory and Time' at '4th KIAE2026', we aim to showcase a diverse array of cultural expressions from different regions all gathered together. This event aspires to highlight how various cultures understand and articulate the ideas of memory and the flow of time, creating an atmosphere of appreciation and understanding of the diverse ways these themes shape human experiences worldwide.
