Artist Avilla Damar has been an integral part of the art scene in Mauritius for approximately ten years. Although she engaged with art earlier, she refrained from showcasing her work in galleries until recently. Born in 1984, she possesses an educational background that merges both Mauritian and Indian systems, having attained her initial degree in Mauritius and a Master's degree in Bangalore, India. This educational foundation significantly influences her artwork, which is acknowledged both nationally and internationally. Her creations were presented at events such as the '19th Asian Art Bangladesh' and the 'Seychelles Biennale of Contemporary Art in 2022, in addition to being featured at 'Chitra Kala Parisath' in Bangalore in 2018, and 'Salon De Mai' from 2022 to 2024.
In her artistic endeavors, the creator aims to depict that people. Individuals from the middle class often feel more distress than those living in the lowest level of the sociol-economic hierarchy. In Mauritius, individuals at the lowest socioeconomic level receive significant social support and enjoy tax relief. For those in the higher income bracket, the obligation to pay taxes does not create a considerable burden. The people who experience the most suffering are those situated between these two extremes. The artist finds herself placed in a social class where she does not receive the advantages given to the underprivileged, whom society believes can support it. As a result, it is the artists themselves who experience the greatest hardship.
Avilla's works were showcased at both the ‘First’ & ‘Second’ phase of ‘Third Kolkata International Art Exhibition 2025’ or ‘3rd KIAE 2025’ for short, curated by artist ‘Kaushik Gupta’ and were held at ‘Birla Academy of Art & Culture’ and ‘Academy of Fine Arts’ Kolkata, in the months of February and March respectively.
The artist lives and works in Mauritius.
